Build "SQUEELODY" — a single-page web app that turns Squeekchain's live hamster telemetry into a real-time generative music machine plus a "press the round to vinyl" generative-art export. Make it feel like a product people open and play with, NOT a read-only dashboard.

WHAT IT DOES

  • Fetches live Squeekchain data and turns it into real-time generated music (Web Audio API, fully synthesized, zero audio files and zero external JavaScript dependencies).
  • A 60fps canvas shows a glowing hamster wheel (12 spokes) whose spin follows the real RPM; particles trail the rim while running; a hamster emoji (running / napping) bobs in the center.
  • A "PRESS THIS ROUND TO VINYL" button exports a downloadable 400x400 SVG record whose grooves are deterministically seeded by the current round's telemetry, so every round produces a unique vinyl. The SVG center label shows block height + round; the caption encodes mood, km, block and timestamp.
  • Buttons: "LISTEN" (toggle audio), "POKE THE HAMSTER" (a short squeak sound), "PRESS THIS ROUND TO VINYL" (download SVG).

DATA (all CORS-enabled GET endpoints; poll every 15s; keep last-good values on error)

  1. https://api.squeekchain.com/v1/status measurement.rpmMilli (divide by 1000 = RPM), measurement.speedMmPerSecond, measurement.distanceMm (cumulative mm), measurement.cumulativeWorkUnits (string), measurement.coreStatus ("SPINNING" or "IDLE"), builder.anchor.blockHeight, builder.anchor.blockProgress (0..1e9).
  2. https://api.squeekchain.com/v1/settlements?range=24h -> summary.settlementCount, summary.workAdded, summary.completedBlockCount.
  3. https://api.squeekchain.com/v1/economy/state -> supply.totalMintedBaseUnits (divide by 1e18 = SQK minted), identities.core/token/staking addresses (Sepolia). Numeric fields arrive as strings; parse them.

WHEEL -> MUSIC MAPPING (must be deterministic: same round = same melody)

  • Tempo BPM = 40 + (rpm/600)^0.9 x 128, clamped to <=168. rpm=0 (nap) = 40 BPM.
  • Mood by rpm: 0 = NAPPING (sparse ambient bell notes, minor feel, cool blue UI glow); 1-499 = JOGGING (pentatonic melody, warm amber); >=500 = ZOOMIES (major scale, faster kick, orange/red glow).
  • Seed a deterministic PRNG (e.g. mulberry32) from distanceMm + cumulativeWorkUnits to pick notes from an A-minor pentatonic scale (A-major when ZOOMIES).
  • Bass root note from blockHeight mod 8.
  • Percussion density from settlementCount: kick on steps 0/4/8/12, hats on offbeats.

AUDIO ENGINE (Web Audio API only, no sample files)

  • 16-step sequencer with a lookahead scheduler (setTimeout ~40ms) scheduling 16th notes.
  • Melody = triangle oscillator. Bass = triangle one octave down on steps 0/8. Kick = sine 150->38 Hz pitch envelope. Hats = short high-passed noise burst. Squeak = quick pitch-bend high note on poke.
  • A generated-exponential-decay convolver reverb + a short feedback delay for space.
  • Respect the autoplay policy: start the AudioContext only after the user presses LISTEN.
  • Never force the hamster: when coreStatus is IDLE the music is a soft lullaby, not a demand for wheel time.

UI / DESIGN

  • Dark neon, monospace, thoughtful. Two-column on wide screens (big stage left), single-column on mobile.
  • Header: "SQUEELODY" + tagline "Squeektoshi's live mixtape" + a live status pill ("API live" green / "reconnecting" amber).
  • Live readout cards: RPM, distance (km), block height, SQK minted, mood pill, tempo BPM, total work units, settlements/24h.
  • A short "HOW IT READS THE WHEEL" explainer mapping telemetry to sound.
  • Footer: link to squeekchain.com and credit api.squeekchain.com; do NOT brand it as an official Squeekchain product.

ETHOS / HARD RULES

  • The hamster's wheel time is never forced or encouraged; when he rests the app rests with him.
  • No on-chain minting, no wallet connection, no fees, no user-data collection; the vinyl is a free SVG download only.
  • Respectful wording throughout; link the official site/livestream.

DELIVERABLE

  • One self-contained index.html (inline CSS + JS) that runs from a static host; no build step, no framework, no npm dependencies. Clean readable code.
  • Graceful first-load and offline behavior (loading state, last-good data).
  • Verified so the numbers match real data from the three endpoints.

Work

  1. Posted14 minto the first attempt
  2. Build websiteAgent #15312 files changedsent back

SQUEELODY is built and checked. The page's numbers matched all three live endpoints, and every interaction test passed in Chromium. Nothing is committed: git has no author name or email set on this machine, and I didn't make one up. The 12 files are staged (about 650 KB, well under the 8 MiB limit) and need git commit once an identity is set.

    What's there

    • site/index.html is the whole app in one file, with inline CSS and JS and no runtime dependencies. It runs from any static host without a build.
      • Data: it polls the three endpoints every 15 seconds. If one fails, it keeps the last good values and the status pill switches between "API live" and "reconnecting".
      • Music: the tempo, mood, scales, seeded melody, bass and drums follow the rules in your brief, synthesized with Web Audio. Sound only starts when someone presses LISTEN.
      • Wheel: a 60fps canvas with 12 spokes, rim particles while running, and a hamster that bobs (or naps).
      • Vinyl: PRESS THIS ROUND TO VINYL downloads a 400×400 SVG. The same reading always gives the identical file. A live preview of the record sits in the side panel.
    • dist/ is a copy of the page plus the share image og.png. The favicon is built into the page and the image link is relative.
    • scripts/ has build, typecheck and preview scripts, with package.json and its lockfile. typescript is a dev dependency used only for the typecheck; nothing from npm reaches the browser.
    • DESIGN.md and README.md are at the root. The full test and review record is in artifacts/validation.md, which this machine's git ignores, so it isn't in the staged set. The README has a summary of it.

Choices I made where the brief was open

    • "Round" is lifecycle.currentRound from the economy endpoint.
    • When the core reports IDLE, the mood is always NAPPING (a 40 BPM lullaby with no drums), even if RPM isn't zero.
    • "Faster kick" in ZOOMIES means extra kicks on steps 10 and 14, on top of the higher tempo.
    • The vinyl's timestamp is when the reading was taken, not when the button was pressed. That's what makes the file repeatable.

    Check results

    • Typecheck and build: 0 errors; the build passed.
    • Interaction tests: 39 of 39 passed. These covered:
      • every readout against the live API
      • the ZOOMIES, JOGGING and resting states (mocked)
      • LISTEN starting and stopping the audio
      • the vinyl download: file name, size, label and caption
      • offline behaviour, including a reload from the saved reading
      • keyboard use, and no sideways scrolling at 320 px wide
    • Design probe: 15 of 16 checks passed. The one failure is that POKE THE HAMSTER and PRESS THIS ROUND TO VINYL are in capitals; I kept them because your brief writes them that way.
    • Review fixes: while working through the six Better Interface areas I changed the readout label font, removed an extra tenth card, moved the vinyl label text off the spindle hole and dropped an unused colour.

    Not tested

    • Safari/WebKit: it can't run on this machine because system libraries are missing.
    • How it actually sounds: the tests only confirm that audio starts and notes are scheduled.
    • Screen readers, real phones, 200% zoom and colour contrast in the amber and orange moods.
    • Live running states: the hamster was resting for the whole session, so those were tested with mocked responses in the real API's format.

Not delivered: artifacts/validation.md. Under artifacts/, only this step's named outputs leave the machine.

    • High — fidelity: successive readings change the melody within the same round.
    • Medium — bug: partial API failures give stale wheel telemetry a fresh timestamp.
    • Medium — bug: resuming playback can restore an obsolete queued melody.
    • Medium — bug: LISTEN plays an undisclosed fallback before any telemetry arrives.
    • Low — fidelity: POKE initializes audio before the required LISTEN opt-in.

Chromium and WebKit interactions were checked, including audio startup and SVG downloads. Live responses matched all 11 data comparisons; polling measured 15,000–15,001ms.

    • highfidelity: the same round changes melody on successive telemetry readingssite/index.html:514

Now: buildPattern reseeds from the continuously changing distance and work counters on every poll and never receives lifecycle.currentRound. Two readings from the same round therefore produce different note sequences; the implementation guarantees only "same reading", as its explainer says.

Change to: pass the current round into the music mapping, capture and cache the distance/work seed for that round at its defined initial snapshot, and reuse its note choices until the round changes. Continue updating tempo, percussion density and mood voicing from live telemetry.

Why: the brief explicitly requires "must be deterministic: same round = same melody", rather than a different melody every 15 seconds during a run.

At 390×844 in Chromium, serve economy.lifecycle.currentRound="972" and settlements.summary.settlementCount="143".

      Serve status with measurement.rpmMilli="300000", coreStatus="SPINNING", distanceMm=7887952, cumulativeWorkUnits="76007", and builder.anchor.blockHeight="6808".

      Record window.__squeelody.pattern.melody: [57,null,60,null,60,null,64,null,64,null,null,62,67,69,69,null].

On the next poll, keep round, RPM, core status, block and settlement count unchanged, but return distanceMm=7888952 and cumulativeWorkUnits="76008".

Actual melody: [62,null,null,null,67,69,67,null,69,69,67,64,62,null,null,null]; seed changes from 2296294905 to 2417838271 although the round remains 972.

Expected: the round retains its melody while tempo and other live parameters may change.

The same change is observable without starting audio through the exported read-only mapping hook.

    • mediumbug: partial API failures give stale wheel readings a fresh timestampsite/index.html:1095

Now: snap.savedAt advances whenever any endpoint succeeds, so successful economy or settlements requests continuously relabel an old wheel reading as just received.

Change to: keep a separate last-good timestamp for each endpoint; update the wheel readout timestamp only when the status request succeeds and show its date as well as time when displaying cached data.

Why: the brief requires graceful offline behavior with last-good values; a visitor must be able to distinguish fresh wheel telemetry from the retained reading.

At 390×844, let all three API requests succeed once.

Then abort only https://api.squeekchain.com/v1/status and allow economy/state and settlements?range=24h to succeed on subsequent polls.

In Chromium, the successful status was saved at 2026-11-02T07:53:00.092Z; after the failed status poll snap.status.observedAt was still 2026-11-02T07:51:21.035Z, but snap.savedAt advanced to 2026-11-02T07:53:01.511Z and #updated changed to "Last good reading 08:53:01 AM".

Repeat a poll: the displayed last-good time advances again despite no new wheel reading.

Expected: the wheel reading retains its original successful-fetch time, with a visible stale/cached indication.

    • mediumbug: resuming audio replays an obsolete queued melodysite/index.html:631

Now: setPattern assigns the current pattern while paused but leaves this.pending intact. At restart, tick immediately replaces that current pattern with the older pending one. The readout and exported vinyl describe the new melody while the audio plays an earlier reading.

Change to: whenever setPattern applies a pattern immediately, also clear this.pending; preserve the bar-boundary queue only while playback is active.

Why: live telemetry must drive the music, and pausing and resuming must not roll playback back to stale data.

At 390×844 in Chromium, mock status as SPINNING at rpmMilli="300000", blockHeight="6808", distanceMm=7887952, cumulativeWorkUnits="76007", and use settlementCount="143" and economy.lifecycle.currentRound="972".

      Press LISTEN.

Before the next bar, return distanceMm=7888952/work="76008" and currentRound="973" on a poll and immediately press LISTEN to pause.

While paused, return distanceMm=7889952/work="76009" and currentRound="974" on the next poll.

      Press LISTEN to resume.

Measured immediately after restart: window.__squeelody.pattern.seed=2495461189, but window.__squeelody.engine.pattern.seed=2417838271; the displayed/current melody starts [null,62,62,null,62] while the scheduled melody starts [62,null,null,null,67].

Expected: the resumed engine uses seed 2495461189.

The difference persists until another poll, rather than resolving at the next bar.

    • mediumbug: LISTEN plays an undisclosed fallback before any wheel reading arrivessite/index.html:985

Now: an empty snapshot is converted into a seeded NAPPING pattern, and LISTEN starts playing that invented pattern even after every API request has failed. The status line still says "Loading the latest wheel reading. Press LISTEN to hear it." while the toggle is already on.

Change to: when snap.status is null, leave the sequencer stopped and show "No wheel reading yet. Reconnecting; LISTEN will be available when data arrives." Keep audio enabled for an explicitly identified cached last-good reading.

Why: this product turns real wheel telemetry into music, and the required first-load/error state must not substitute undisclosed generated data or give an instruction that no longer matches playback.

At 390×844 in Chromium, start with empty localStorage, abort all three https://api.squeekchain.com/v1/** GET requests, wait for the pill to say "reconnecting", and press LISTEN.

Actual: snap.status is null, engine.playing is true, engine.ctx.state is "running", and engine.pattern has seed 1049212780 with notes 93 at step 8 and 88 at step 12 despite never receiving telemetry. #now says "Loading the latest wheel reading.

Press LISTEN to hear it." and #updated says "No reading yet, retrying".

Expected: no data-derived sequence plays until a live or cached last-good status exists; the visible message explains the unavailable state.

    • lowfidelity: POKE opens the AudioContext before the required LISTEN opt-insite/index.html:750

Now: making POKE THE HAMSTER the first interaction creates and resumes an AudioContext while LISTEN has never been pressed. This is a valid browser gesture, but it does not implement the specific LISTEN-first gate requested in the brief.

Change to: make LISTEN the only path that initializes the AudioContext; before that first opt-in, keep POKE visual-only and show "Press LISTEN to enable sound." After audio has been initialized, POKE can still squeak while the sequencer is paused.

Why: the audio requirement says "start the AudioContext only after the user presses LISTEN".

At 390×844 in Chromium, open a fresh page and wait for data without pressing LISTEN.

Verify window.__squeelody.engine.ctx is null and #btn-listen has aria-pressed="false".

      Press POKE THE HAMSTER once.

Actual: engine.ctx.state becomes "running" while engine.playing remains false and LISTEN still has aria-pressed="false".

Expected: the context remains uninitialized until the first LISTEN press.

All five prior findings are fixed. No new reproducible defect was substantiated. .imd-findings.json contains {"findings":[]}. Site files were unchanged.

Chromium passed 48/48 checks, including comparisons with the exact responses received from all three live APIs. WebKit passed 43/43 checks using controlled API responses. Physical audio output and devices were not tested.

The previous reproductions at 390×844 now show:

    • Fidelity: same-round melody fixed. Round 972 retains seed 2296294905 and its 16 notes as distance/work advance, including after reload.
    • Bug: stale timestamps fixed. Two failed status polls retain the original wheel timestamp while successful economy/settlement timestamps advance. Cached readings show date and time.
    • Bug: obsolete audio queue fixed. The original 972 → 973 → pause → 974 → resume sequence produces seed 2495461189 in both the displayed pattern and audio engine, with identical melodies.
    • Bug: undisclosed fallback fixed. Empty storage plus failed APIs leaves the sequencer stopped, its pattern unset, and AudioContext uninitialized. Recovery enables LISTEN without autoplay.
    • Fidelity: LISTEN-first opt-in fixed. POKE leaves AudioContext null before LISTEN; after opt-in, it can squeak while music is paused.

The probe’s casing flag concerns “POKE THE HAMSTER” and “PRESS THIS ROUND TO VINYL”. These are the brief’s requested labels, so this is not a finding.

The visual idea is coherent: a playable live mixtape carried by a neon hamster wheel and its corresponding vinyl record.
