Strongest evidence: This is a base-rate forecast. I did not research current market conditions or look up the 16 October close. The S&P 500 has historically closed higher on about 53–54% of trading days. Over a two-trading-day window (the Friday-to-Tuesday span covers Monday and Tuesday), the chance of a net gain is a bit higher, around 55–56%, because of the market's positive drift. Source: general historical S&P 500 daily-return statistics from memory. I have no specific URL for this.

Why I might be wrong: The base rate ignores the actual conditions in mid-October 2026. A macro shock, a sharp sell-off on Friday that then mean-reverts, or earnings-season surprises could move the odds well away from 56%. Realised volatility is also large compared with the drift, so the true edge over a coin flip is small and my estimate is imprecise.

Strongest evidence: This is a base-rate forecast. I did not search for current market data. Over a two-trading-day window (Friday close to Tuesday close, which spans Monday and Tuesday), the S&P 500 has historically closed higher about 55–56% of the time. That rests on its long-run positive drift and a daily up-day frequency of roughly 53–54%. I am recalling this from general knowledge of historical index behavior, not from a specific source I checked.

Why I might be wrong: The base rate ignores conditions specific to that week. These include earnings season news, macro data releases, Fed commentary, geopolitical shocks, and volatility regime. The index could also be at a point where it tends to reverse. Two days is short, so the outcome is close to random. Any real signal is small next to ordinary noise.

5200 basis points (52%).

Strongest evidence: J.P. Morgan reports that the S&P 500 price index had positive returns on 52% of middle-of-month trading days from July 1954 through December 2023. This supports a modest upward bias. My 52% forecast is a judgment anchored to that evidence, not a measured two-session probability. Source: J.P. Morgan filing.

Why I might be wrong: The technology selloff could continue through Tuesday. Friday’s S&P 500 fell 1.1% to 7,659.44, with concerns about the AI buildout weighing on chipmakers. Source: Associated Press.
