Messi or Ronaldo: who is better? (all time)

Researched 2026-09-29. Both players are still active, so every career total below will change.

Answer

On balance, Lionel Messi has the stronger all-time case. He is ahead on most of the measures that try to judge overall quality: individual awards, goals per game, chance creation, the head-to-head record, and, since December 2022, the World Cup. Cristiano Ronaldo is ahead on totals and longevity: most official goals, most international goals and caps, most Champions League goals, and scoring records across more leagues and countries.

"Better" has no single agreed definition, so this is a judgement, not a fact. If you value total goals, big-match Champions League scoring and staying at the top for a long time above everything else, you can reasonably pick Ronaldo. The evidence and the reasoning are set out below so you can weigh them yourself.

2. Inferences (my reasoning, not established fact)

  • Peak quality favours Messi. Journalists voted him Ballon d'Or 8 times to Ronaldo's 5, including 4 of the 5 years (2008–2017) when both were at their best. He also won more Golden Shoes and has the higher scoring rate. These are separate signals, and they point the same way.
  • All-round contribution favours Messi. His goal totals are close to Ronaldo's while his assist totals are far higher (roughly 424–463 against ~307). Ronaldo is the more specialised finisher. Messi both scores and creates.
  • Ronaldo's strongest case is output and adaptability. He has the most goals, the most international goals, the most Champions League goals, and has been top scorer in four leagues. That shows he stayed elite for longer and across more environments. Messi played 17 seasons at one club.
  • The World Cup gap mostly closed in 2022. Before Qatar, the absence of a World Cup was the main argument against Messi. He then won it and was named best player of the tournament, and he reached another final in 2026. Ronaldo has never gone past the semi-finals.
  • The late-career stats should count for little. Much of both players' recent output came in MLS (Messi) and the Saudi Pro League (Ronaldo). These leagues are weaker than Europe's top five, so recent totals are less meaningful than their European peaks.

3. Uncertainty

  • Stats sources disagree slightly. Messi's goals appear as 929 or 931, and assist counts range from 405 to 463, depending on the source date and on which games and assists are counted. Assist data before about 2009 is especially inconsistent. None of these differences changes the conclusions above.
  • Some figures come from secondary sources. The head-to-head numbers and the 2026 calendar-year numbers were taken from search-result summaries of Planet Football, 90min and GiveMeSport. I did not check them line by line against match data. messixronaldo.com is a fan-run tracker.
  • Wikipedia pages were read through an automated summariser. One summary gave clearly wrong club totals for Messi, so I left those figures out. Before relying on any figure, confirm it against the page itself or against Transfermarkt, FBref or Opta.
  • Awards are opinion. The Ballon d'Or is decided by a vote and is partly shaped by team success and media stories.
  • Both players are still active, so the career totals will keep changing.

4. Unanswered questions

  • What does "better" mean? Peak, longevity, trophies, statistics and influence on team results all give different weightings, and nothing objective settles which should count most.
  • Advanced metrics (xG, xA, progressive carries, on/off-pitch impact) were not collected here. They exist only for part of either career (roughly since 2010 in public data), so a full-career comparison is not possible.
  • The effect of teammates and team system (Barcelona's possession style against Real Madrid's counter-attacks) cannot be separated cleanly from individual quality.
  • Comparison with other all-time greats (Pelé, Maradona, Cruyff) is outside the scope of this question.

Answer: on balance, Messi is better, and Ronaldo has a reasonable case. "Better" has no agreed definition, so this is a judgement from the evidence, not a provable fact.

    Why Messi:

    • Awards: 8 Ballon d'Or wins to Ronaldo's 5, and 6 European Golden Shoes to 4.
    • Scoring and creating: about 0.79 goals per game to 0.73, and roughly 424–463 assists to about 307.
    • Head-to-head: 16 wins to 11 across their 36 meetings.
    • World Cup: he won it in 2022 and was named best player of the tournament in 2014 and 2022. He also reached the 2026 final, which Argentina lost 1–0 to Spain after extra time.

    Why Ronaldo:

    • Totals: about 979 career goals to Messi's roughly 930.
    • International records: most goals (146) and most caps (234) for a national team.
    • Champions League: 5 titles and a record 140 goals.
    • Range: top scorer in four different leagues and league titles in England, Spain and Italy.

The report is at artifacts/report.md. It keeps attributed facts in a sourced table, separate from my inferences, the uncertainties and the unanswered questions. A short README next to it states the question and its limits.

A few things to know before relying on the numbers:

    • Some figures are unconfirmed. The head-to-head record and the 2026 calendar-year stats came from search summaries of Planet Football, 90min and GiveMeSport. I did not check them against match data.
    • Wikipedia was read through an automated summariser. One summary gave clearly wrong club totals for Messi, so I left those out.
    • Sources disagree slightly on Messi's totals: 929 or 931 goals, and 405 to 463 assists. None of this changes the verdict.
    • Both players are still active, so the totals will keep moving.
    • No independent review has been done. My own check only confirmed that the files exist and contain links, not that the research is true.

Both files are uncommitted, as required.
