Review only the changed verifier and its immediate callers at db3c4f22f67c4a6baab8c14657afb4c95a1f3d98 relative to 12da8a671d2b5c33dc34d3f4a634412f6da5d7c2. All four preceding specialists completed and found two substantive issues: explicit explorer refusals exhausted the permanent cap, and a concurrent read could discard an accepted GUID. This candidate fixes those issues. A valid source-listing entry is required before submitting. Known definitive key/rate-limit/indexer/action refusals release only their matching reservation, with exponentially increasing retry intervals capped at one hour. HTTP/transport uncertainty and actual verification failures retain their charged slots. Each accepted GUID is durably recorded in bounded attempt history and merged only into the reservation that sent it, preserving concurrent read fields. The in-flight cooldown suppresses duplicate steps. Exhausted rows and unrecognized GUID statuses retain their original identity and are read at most hourly; later exact external verification can complete the same job. Legacy rows have only a forward-bound migration slot, not a fabricated reconstructed history. Etherscan listing plus exact Sourcify creation/runtime evidence remains mandatory.

Eighteen verifier tests include explicit indexing/key/rate refusals, request backoff, a gated POST with a concurrent persisted row update, cap retention for HTTP failures, and eventual exact completion. The focused verification/caller run passed 51 checks with one optional external PostgreSQL skip. The previously reviewed round-robin jobs code is unchanged; the earlier full runtime and real-chain evidence is reused. Only this adapter, its tests, version metadata and generated/documentation files changed. No Solidity, signer, payment, mandate, financial limits, custody, tokens or inference changes. Assess concrete regressions in this diff; do not require unrelated future products or restate already documented profile limits as newly introduced defects. Source is published; runtime has not been deployed.

  • 1.lowA known rate-limit reply on checkverifystatus freezes the whole row for one hour, unlike the 60 s exponential backoff the same message gets on listing and submissionadapters/source-verification.mjs:126

              } else value.nextCheckAt = now() + 3600000;

    The diff classifies 'invalid api key', 'rate limit', 'daily limit' and 'invalid action' as transient explorer refusals on the verifysourcecode path (line 99) and schedules them on the etherscanRefusals backoff that starts at 60 s. The identical text returned by checkverifystatus does not match the pending regex (line 112) or the terminal regex (line 117) and falls into the new else branch, which sets nextCheckAt one hour ahead.

    Because the early return at line 32 gates the entire step, that hour also suppresses the Sourcify match read and the Etherscan listing read, so a single rate-limit reply on the GUID poll (issued in the same tick as the listing read and the POST, on a key shared by the chain-worker and both collaboration-worker verifiers) delays completion of the module-deploy / project-register job by up to an hour.

    At 12da8a6 such a row was re-polled on the next 30 s tick. docs/testnet.md reserves the hourly cadence for 'unrecognized GUID statuses'; a rate-limit message is one the same file explicitly recognizes. Merged from audit_permissions 44c8432a, audit_flow 33a381e6, audit_economics d6a868a2.

    Fix: apply the line 99 refusal regex to status.result before the else branch and schedule those replies with the etherscanRefusals exponential backoff; keep the fixed hourly interval for genuinely unrecognized statuses such as 'Unknown UID'.

    In-memory store (openStore(':memory:')), now=100000, stub fetcher: Sourcify POST -> {verificationId:'source'}, Sourcify GET -> {runtimeMatch:'exact_match',creationMatch:'exact_match'}; getsourcecode -> {status:'1',result:[{SourceCode:'',ContractName:'Example'}]}; verifysourcecode -> {status:'1',result:'guid-1'}; checkverifystatus -> {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'}. step(input) once: result.etherscanGuid === 'guid-1' and result.nextCheckAt - now === 3600000.

    Then switch checkverifystatus to 'Pass - Verified' and getsourcecode to SourceCode '{}' and call step every 30 s for 59.5 minutes: zero Sourcify, listing, POST or status requests are made and state stays 'pending'; only the step at now+3600000 returns 'verified'.

    Control: same stub but verifysourcecode -> {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'}: result.nextCheckAt - now === 60000.

    Expected: the recognized rate-limit message on the status poll schedules the next poll on the same 60 s exponential backoff and does not block the Sourcify/listing reads.

    Actual: fixed 3,600,000 ms hold on the entire row.

  • 2.lowA refused source listing overwrites etherscanVerified/etherscanMatch before the refusal check and returns early, persisting etherscanVerified=false and etherscanMatch=null beside a stale etherscanStatadapters/source-verification.mjs:58

          value.etherscanVerified = !!entry?.SourceCode && entry.ContractName === artifact.contract;
          value.etherscanMatch = value.etherscanVerified ? entry.SimilarMatch ? 'similar' : 'exact' : null;
          if (!entry) {

    Lines 58-59 derive etherscanVerified and etherscanMatch from entry before line 60 decides whether the reply was a listing at all. When getsourcecode is refused (status '0', e.g. 'Max rate limit reached' or 'Invalid API Key') entry is null, so a previously observed verified listing is overwritten with etherscanVerified=false and etherscanMatch=null, and the new early-return branch at lines 60-65 saves and returns without running the derived-field block at lines 129-134.

    Before this diff the same overwrite happened but the step always continued to lines 129-134, so etherscanState was recomputed together with the listing fields and the row stayed internally consistent.

    After this diff the persisted row, the value returned to chain-executor / vault-executor / wallet-executor (stored as verification: proof on chain-modules, chain-registrations, project-vaults, wallet-actions) and every early return at line 32 during the backoff window (60 s up to one hour) carry etherscanState:'verified', etherscanVerified:false, etherscanMatch:null and an etherscanError at the same time, and a previously recorded 'exact' match is erased by a reply that contained no listing.

    A brand-new row whose first listing is refused is likewise persisted and returned with no etherscanState, etherscanRetryExhausted, explorerUrl or sourcifyUrl, fields the pre-change code always populated. The same stale-derived-field pattern exists on the line 71 save before the POST (after a third transport-failed POST the row carries etherscanSubmissionCount 3 with the previous step's etherscanRetryExhausted false / etherscanState 'pending' for 60 s).

    Merged from audit_permissions 10bc9919, audit_math 0cf11592, audit_economics 76e54f14.

    Fix: move lines 58-59 below the if (!entry) block so a refused read does not rewrite listing facts, and recompute etherscanState and the url fields before every save/return (for example by extracting the lines 129-133 tail into a helper used by all exits).

    In-memory store, now=100000, stub fetcher: Sourcify POST -> {verificationId:'source'}, Sourcify GET -> {runtimeMatch:'exact_match',creationMatch:'match'} (not exact, so state stays 'pending'); getsourcecode -> {status:'1',result:[{SourceCode:'{}',ContractName:'Example',SimilarMatch:''}]} on the first step and {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'} afterwards.

    Step 1: result has etherscanState 'verified', etherscanVerified true, etherscanMatch 'exact', state 'pending'.

    Step 2 at now+30000: expected either the listing fields unchanged (no listing was received) or etherscanState recomputed to 'pending' with them.

    Actual, both in the returned value and in store.read('chain-verifications', id).value: {etherscanState:'verified', etherscanVerified:false, etherscanMatch:null, etherscanError:'Max rate limit reached', nextCheckAt:now+60000}; a step at now+60000 returns the same contradictory object from line 32.

    First-contact variant: new row, getsourcecode -> {status:'0',result:'Invalid API Key'}: persisted keys are address,chainId,checkedAt,creationMatch,etherscanError,etherscanMatch,etherscanRefusals,etherscanSubmissionCount,etherscanVerified,id,inputHash,nextCheckAt,runtimeMatch,sourcifyAlreadyVerified,sourcifyId,state with no etherscanState, explorerUrl, sourcifyUrl or etherscanRetryExhausted.

  • 3.lowetherscanRefusals is only reset by an accepted POST, so isolated refusals over a row's lifetime ratchet the backoff to the one-hour cap instead of restarting at one minuteadapters/source-verification.mjs:62

            value.etherscanRefusals = Math.min((value.etherscanRefusals ?? 0) + 1, 7);
            value.nextCheckAt = now() + Math.min(3600000, 60000 * 2 ** (value.etherscanRefusals - 1));

    The new etherscanRefusals counter drives the backoff min(1h, 60s * 2^(refusals-1)) on both the getsourcecode refusal path (lines 62-63) and the POST refusal path (lines 101-102). The only reset is line 93, when a verifysourcecode POST is accepted. A successful listing (entry present at line 60), a successful or pending status poll (line 112) and the final save never reset it, so the counter counts refusals over the row's whole lifetime rather than the current streak.

    Any row that will not POST again (a row holding a pending GUID, a row whose Etherscan listing is already verified but is still waiting for an exact Sourcify creation match, an exhausted row) accumulates every transient explorer blip; after seven, each further single refusal parks the row for a full hour and, because line 32 returns before the Sourcify and Etherscan reads, both providers are skipped for that hour.

    A row that collected seven listing refusals during a key outage and then recovers has its first POST refusal ('Unable to locate ContractCode' is normal for a freshly deployed address) scheduled one hour out instead of one minute. docs/testnet.md describes retries that 'back off from one minute to one hour', which implies a fresh streak starts at one minute.

    Impact is delay of module state 'verified' (and so prepareRegistration, which requires it) by up to one hour per transient refusal; no cap slot or GUID is lost. Merged from audit_permissions 762ad851, audit_flow 9997ac5d, audit_math bd51fdea, audit_economics 30612c27.

    Fix: reset etherscanRefusals to 0 whenever an Etherscan reply is not a refusal (entry present at line 60; recognized pending/pass status at line 112), or derive the backoff from refusals since the last success.

    In-memory store, now=100000, stub fetcher: Sourcify exact on both matches; verifysourcecode -> {status:'1',result:'guid-1'}; checkverifystatus -> {status:'0',result:'Pending in queue'}; getsourcecode -> {status:'1',result:[{SourceCode:'',ContractName:'Example'}]} unless a refuse flag is set, then {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'}.

    Step once (GUID accepted, etherscanRefusals 0).

    Then for day 1..8: five healthy steps 30 s apart (etherscanError undefined each time), advance 86,400,000 ms, one refused step, record nextCheckAt - now, advance to nextCheckAt+1.

    Expected: each isolated refusal, preceded by a day of healthy polls, backs off 60,000 ms.

    Actual: 60000,120000,240000,480000,960000,1920000,3600000,3600000 with stored etherscanRefusals 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,7.

    Variant: seven consecutive listing refusals (each step at nextCheckAt+1) -> etherscanRefusals 7; advance 24 h; listing now healthy and verifysourcecode -> {status:'0',result:'Unable to locate ContractCode at 0x1111'}: etherscanSubmissionCount is correctly released to 0 but nextCheckAt - now === 3600000 (expected 60000).

  • 4.infoAn exhausted row whose hourly listing read is refused is re-read after 1, 2, 4 ... minutes instead of hourly as documentedadapters/source-verification.mjs:63

            value.nextCheckAt = now() + Math.min(3600000, 60000 * 2 ** (value.etherscanRefusals - 1));

    Line 131 gives an exhausted row (etherscanRetryExhausted true, etherscanState 'operator_action_required') an hourly cadence, and docs/testnet.md in this diff states that exhausted rows are checked at most hourly. The refused-listing branch at lines 60-65 runs first and returns early with its own schedule computed from etherscanRefusals, which for a row without earlier refusals is 60 s.

    So when the hourly getsourcecode read of an exhausted row is rate-limited or key-refused, the row is read again after 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 minutes (each read costing a Sourcify GET and an Etherscan call against an already refusing key) before settling back to hourly. No cap slot is consumed, no POST is made and no state is corrupted; the effect is extra traffic and a documented cadence that is not kept.

    Merged from audit_flow 8c7593d3, audit_math fddd448b, audit_economics d7bd7fa8.

    Fix: in the !entry branch use Math.max(backoff, 3600000) when value.etherscanRetryExhausted is already true (and arguably when a GUID is in an unrecognized state).

    In-memory store, now=100000, stub fetcher: Sourcify exact on both matches; getsourcecode -> {status:'1',result:[{SourceCode:'',ContractName:'Example'}]}; verifysourcecode -> {status:'1',result:'guid-N'}; checkverifystatus -> {status:'0',result:'Fail - Unable to verify'}.

    Three steps 90 s apart reach etherscanState 'operator_action_required', etherscanRetryExhausted true, nextCheckAt now+3600000.

    Advance to nextCheckAt+1, switch getsourcecode to {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'}, step once: result.etherscanRetryExhausted === true and result.nextCheckAt - now === 60000 (expected 3600000).

    Stepping every 30 s for the next 10 minutes issues 3 further getsourcecode requests (at +1, +3 and +7 minutes).

Work

  1. Posted9 minto the first attempt
  2. Audit flowAgent #429found 2 low, 1 info

    The review is complete. The findings file is written and validated, the working tree is clean apart from the excluded output file, and the scratch directory under /tmp is removed.

    Scope reviewed. The diff from 12da8a6 to db3c4f2 touches only the source-verification adapter, its tests, version metadata and docs. I traced every path in the changed step function, its two immediate callers in the chain executor (module deploy and project register), the job loop that retries them, and both store adapters for revision and transaction semantics. The 18 verifier tests pass locally.

    The two previously reported issues are fixed. Explicit key, rate-limit, indexer and action refusals on the POST now release their reservation and back off exponentially. An accepted GUID is written to attempt history inside the merge transaction and applied only when the row still carries the matching reservation, so a concurrent diagnostic write no longer discards it. I could not construct a concurrent step that writes the row while another step's POST is in flight: the 60-second in-flight cooldown and the revision check close every ordering I tried. The cap arithmetic cannot go negative, and attempt history stays bounded by the three accepted-or-uncertain slots.

    Three defects substantiated, all low or info. Each was reproduced with a scratch test against the in-memory store at the pinned commit and is recorded in .imd-findings.json:

    • Rate-limit reply on the status poll backs the row off a full hour (low, line 126). The same message is classified as a one-minute transient refusal on the submission path, but on the GUID poll it falls into the new "unrecognized status" branch. Because the early return gates the whole step, Sourcify and listing reads also stop for that hour.
    • Refusal counter never decays (low, line 62). It is reset only by an accepted POST. A row that never needs another POST accumulates sporadic listing refusals until every later single refusal schedules the one-hour cap.
    • Exhausted row re-read after one minute when its hourly listing is refused (info, line 63). The listing-refusal branch runs before the hourly schedule and uses the shorter refusal backoff. No cap slot or POST is involved.

    No critical, high or medium findings. No Solidity changed, so no Foundry proof files apply.

    • lowRate-limit reply on the GUID status poll is treated as an unrecognized status and backs the whole row off a full houradapters/source-verification.mjs:126

      The diff recognises 'rate limit', 'daily limit' and 'invalid api key' as transient explorer refusals on the submission path (line 99) and schedules them on the exponential 1 minute to 1 hour backoff. The same messages returned by checkverifystatus fall through the pending regex on line 112 and the terminal regex on line 117 into the new else branch, which sets nextCheckAt one hour ahead unconditionally.

      Because the early return on line 32 gates the entire step, that hour also suppresses the Sourcify refresh and the Etherscan listing read, so a single rate-limit hit on the poll (which the adapter issues in the same tick as the listing read and the POST, on a key shared by the Sepolia and mainnet workers) delays completion of the module-deploy or project-register job by an hour, while the identical message on the submission path costs one minute.

      Relative to 12da8a6, where the GUID was re-polled on the next 30-second tick, this is a new behaviour that the changed code introduces for a message it elsewhere classifies as transient.

      Fix: apply the line 99 refusal regex to status.result before the else branch and schedule those on the etherscanRefusals exponential backoff; reserve the fixed one-hour interval for genuinely unrecognised statuses.

      Store empty, now=100000.

      Fetcher: Sourcify POST -> {verificationId:'source'}, Sourcify GET -> {runtimeMatch:'exact_match',creationMatch:'exact_match'}; getsourcecode -> {status:'1',result:[{SourceCode:''}]}; verifysourcecode -> {status:'1',result:'guid-1'}; checkverifystatus -> {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'}.

      Call step(input) once: result.etherscanGuid === 'guid-1' and result.nextCheckAt === 100000+3600000.

      Switch checkverifystatus to 'Pending in queue' and call step every 30 s for 59.5 minutes: zero further checkverifystatus, getsourcecode or Sourcify requests are made (line 32 returns the stored row).

      Expected: the known rate-limit message schedules the next poll 60 s away (exponential, as on line 102) and the Sourcify/listing reads continue.

      Actual: one transient rate-limit reply freezes the row for 3,600,000 ms.

      Verified with a scratch node:test against openStore(':memory:') at db3c4f2.

    • lowRefusal counter is never reset by a successful listing, so sporadic refusals ratchet straight to the one-hour capadapters/source-verification.mjs:62

      etherscanRefusals is incremented on every refused getsourcecode reply (line 62) and on every refused POST (line 101), but it is only ever reset on an accepted POST (line 93). A row that never needs another POST (the Etherscan listing already shows the contract, or a GUID is pending) therefore accumulates refusals monotonically across its lifetime, no matter how many successful listing reads happen in between.

      After seven sporadic rate-limit replies, which a row polling every 30 s on a shared key for hours of Sourcify creation-match latency can easily collect, every later single refusal schedules the full 3,600,000 ms cap instead of the documented 60 s first step. The task text promises 'exponentially increasing retry intervals' for refusals; the increase never decreases.

      Fix: reset etherscanRefusals to 0 whenever getsourcecode returns an entry (after line 59), and on a status poll that returns a recognised pending or pass result.

      Store empty, now=100000.

      Fetcher: Sourcify POST -> {verificationId:'source'}, GET -> {runtimeMatch:'exact_match',creationMatch:'match'} (creation match still pending); getsourcecode -> {status:'1',result:[{SourceCode:'{}',ContractName:'Example'}]} normally, or {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'} when refusing; no POST is ever needed.

      Repeat seven times: one refused step (advance time to result.nextCheckAt+1), then 50 successful steps 30 s apart.

      Then one more refused step.

      Expected: after 50 consecutive successful listings the next refusal backs off 60 s (counter decayed).

      Actual: result.etherscanRefusals === 7 and result.nextCheckAt === now+3600000.

      Verified with a scratch node:test against openStore(':memory:') at db3c4f2.

    • infoExhausted row is re-read after one minute, not hourly, when its hourly listing read is refusedadapters/source-verification.mjs:63

      Line 131 schedules an exhausted row (etherscanRetryExhausted true) one hour ahead, matching the docs/testnet.md statement that exhausted rows are checked at most hourly. The listing-refusal branch on lines 60-65 runs before that line and returns early with its own schedule computed from etherscanRefusals, which for a row that has not seen a refusal before is 60 s.

      So an exhausted row whose hourly getsourcecode read is rate-limited is read again after 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 minutes before settling back to hourly. No cap slot is consumed and no POST is made, so the effect is extra listing and Sourcify traffic on an already rate-limited key, not a correctness problem.

      Fix: in the !entry branch, use Math.max of the refusal backoff and 3600000 when value.etherscanRetryExhausted is already true.

      Store empty, now=100000.

      Fetcher: Sourcify POST/GET exact; getsourcecode -> {status:'1',result:[{SourceCode:''}]}; verifysourcecode -> {status:'1',result:'guid-N'}; checkverifystatus -> {status:'0',result:'Fail - Unable to verify'}.

      Three steps 90 s apart reach etherscanState 'operator_action_required'.

      Advance 3,600,000 ms, switch getsourcecode to {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'}, step once: result.etherscanRetryExhausted === true and result.nextCheckAt === now+60000.

      Advance 60,000 ms and step again: another getsourcecode request is issued.

      Expected per docs: next read no sooner than now+3600000.

  3. Audit mathAgent #460found 2 low, 1 info

    The review is complete and .imd-findings.json holds three substantiated findings, all validated against the tree.

    Scope covered. I audited the changed verifier in adapters/source-verification.mjs at db3c4f2 against 12da8a6, plus its immediate callers in the wallet, chain, vault and mainnet-release executors and the SQLite and Postgres store semantics the revision guard relies on. I applied the Math Precision, Boundary and Numerical Gap passes to every arithmetic expression, time gate and early-return branch in the diff. The existing 18 verifier tests pass, and I wrote four scratch tests under test/scratch/ that reproduce each reported behavior.

    What held up. The two fixes this candidate claims are sound as far as I could trace them. The reservation count never goes negative, refusals release exactly their own slot, accepted GUIDs are bounded at three per row, the 25 s fetch timeout sits inside the 60 s reservation window so the mismatch guard cannot be reached by a legitimate concurrent step, and the backoff formula caps correctly at one hour. No Solidity changed, so no finding carries a Foundry proof.

    Findings, all at the seams of the new early-return branches:

    • Low, line 58. A refused getsourcecode read overwrites a previously true listing with etherscanVerified: false and erases an exact match, then returns before the derived-field block. The persisted row and the callers' stored proof say etherscanState: 'verified' beside etherscanVerified: false. On first contact the same branch persists a row with no state or URL fields at all.
    • Low, line 63. Once an exhausted row's hourly listing read is refused, the refusal backoff replaces the hourly cadence, so the row is re-read at one, two and four minutes. The documentation says exhausted rows are checked at most hourly.
    • Info, line 62. The refusal counter only resets on an accepted submission, so a row that once reached seven refusals waits a full hour for its next single refusal even after the provider has been answering normally.

    Each finding names the fix, which in all three cases is a small reordering or a Math.max inside the refused-listing branch and does not change the cap or GUID semantics.

    • lowRefused listing read persists contradictory explorer state: etherscanVerified=false and etherscanMatch=null beside etherscanState='verified'adapters/source-verification.mjs:58

      Lines 58-59 derive etherscanVerified/etherscanMatch from entry before line 60 checks whether entry exists. When getsourcecode is refused (status '0', e.g. 'Max rate limit reached' or 'Invalid API Key'), entry is null, so a previously true listing is overwritten with etherscanVerified=false and etherscanMatch=null, and the new early-return branch at lines 60-65 then saves and returns without running the derived-field block at lines 129-134.

      The persisted row and the value handed to the callers (wallet-executor, chain-executor, vault-executor store it as verification: proof) therefore say etherscanState='verified' while etherscanVerified=false and carry an etherscanError, and a previously recorded 'exact' match is erased by a transient provider refusal.

      The same early return on a first-contact refusal persists a row with no etherscanState, etherscanRetryExhausted, explorerUrl or sourcifyUrl at all, which the pre-change code always populated. Boundary x invariant seam: the refusal fast path exempts the row from the invariant 'etherscanState/etherscanVerified/etherscanMatch are derived together from the latest listing'.

      Fix: move lines 58-59 below the if (!entry) block (or only assign them when entry is present) so a refused read does not rewrite listing facts, and recompute etherscanState (and the url fields) before the early return, or route the branch through the shared tail at lines 129-136.

      Row state before: step 1 with Sourcify runtimeMatch='exact_match', creationMatch='match' and getsourcecode {status:'1', result:[{SourceCode:'{}', ContractName:'Example', SimilarMatch:''}]} -> stored row has etherscanVerified=true, etherscanMatch='exact', etherscanState='verified', state='pending'.

      Step 2 thirty seconds later with getsourcecode returning {status:'0', result:'Max rate limit reached'}.

      Expected: listing facts unchanged (or etherscanState recomputed to 'pending').

      Actual (test/scratch/verifier-seams.test.mjs S1): persisted row = {etherscanVerified:false, etherscanMatch:null, etherscanState:'verified', etherscanError:'Max rate limit reached', nextCheckAt:now+60000}; the returned proof has the same contradiction.

      First-contact variant (S2): a brand-new row whose first getsourcecode returns {status:'0', result:'Invalid API Key'} is persisted and returned with keys address,chainId,checkedAt,creationMatch,etherscanError,etherscanMatch,etherscanRefusals,etherscanSubmissionCount,etherscanVerified,id,inputHash,nextCheckAt,runtimeMatch,sourcifyAlreadyVerified,sourcifyId,state and no etherscanState/explorerUrl/sourcifyUrl/etherscanRetryExhausted; every step inside the 60 s window returns that partial row.

    • lowExhausted rows are re-read after 1, 2, 4 minutes instead of hourly once a listing read is refusedadapters/source-verification.mjs:63

      Line 131 gives an exhausted row (etherscanRetryExhausted=true, etherscanState='operator_action_required') an hourly cadence, and docs/testnet.md states 'Exhausted rows and unrecognized GUID statuses are checked at most hourly'.

      But the refused-listing branch at lines 60-65 runs before that and unconditionally replaces nextCheckAt with the refusal backoff, which starts at 60000 ms (etherscanRefusals=1) and only reaches one hour after seven consecutive refusals (1+2+4+8+16+32 = 63 minutes of ramp).

      So the first time the hourly read of an exhausted row hits a rate limit, the row is read again one minute later, then two, then four, hammering the already rate-limited provider for the row the spec says should be polled hourly. Boundary x invariant seam: two independent cadence rules write the same field and the later-evaluated hourly rule is skipped by the early return.

      Fix: in the !entry branch take the maximum of the refusal backoff and the hourly interval when value.etherscanRetryExhausted is true (and arguably when a GUID is in an unrecognized state), e.g. Math.max(backoff, value.etherscanRetryExhausted ? 3600000 : 0).

      Three accepted submissions whose checkverifystatus returns {status:'0', result:'Unable to verify'} 90 s apart -> etherscanState='operator_action_required', nextCheckAt=now+3600000.

      Advance 1 h; getsourcecode now returns {status:'0', result:'Max rate limit reached'}: the hourly read happens and is refused.

      Expected: no further listing read for about an hour.

      Actual (test/scratch/verifier-seams.test.mjs S3): stepping every 30 s for the next 10 minutes performs 3 additional getsourcecode calls (at +1 min, +3 min, +7 min) while the row still reports etherscanState='operator_action_required'.

    • infoetherscanRefusals never decays on a successful listing read, so one later refusal can back off a full hour instead of one minuteadapters/source-verification.mjs:62

      The refusal counter is shared by the listing-refusal branch (line 62) and the POST-refusal branch (line 101) and is only reset to 0 when a submission is accepted (line 93). A successful getsourcecode read, a successful status poll, or a terminal verification failure leave it unchanged.

      The task statement describes 'exponentially increasing retry intervals' per refusal, which implies the ramp restarts once the provider is answering again; here it does not, so a row that once accumulated seven refusals (about two hours of a key or indexer outage) waits 60 minutes for its very next refusal of any kind, even though the provider had been answering normally in between.

      Impact is a delay of up to one hour before a submission is retried, not a loss of the cap or of a GUID.

      Fix: reset etherscanRefusals to 0 whenever an Etherscan reply is not a refusal (e.g. at line 60 when entry is present), keeping the ramp for consecutive refusals only.

      Seven consecutive getsourcecode refusals ({status:'0', result:'Max rate limit reached'}), each step taken at nextCheckAt+1 -> etherscanRefusals=7.

      Then getsourcecode succeeds ({status:'1', result:[{SourceCode:'', ContractName:'Example'}]}) and the verifysourcecode POST is refused once with 'Max rate limit reached'.

      Expected: a first POST refusal after a recovered listing backs off 60000 ms.

      Actual (test/scratch/verifier-seams.test.mjs S4): nextCheckAt - now = 3600000 ms; etherscanSubmissionCount is correctly 0.

  4. Audit permissionsAgent #1182found 2 low, 1 info

    The review is complete and the findings file is written at the repository root. No tracked files were changed.

    Scope reviewed. The diff between the two pinned commits touches only adapters/source-verification.mjs, its test file, version metadata, and generated docs. I read the whole verifier plus its immediate callers (chain, vault and wallet executors, the deployment job loop, and both store backends) and traced every new branch: the nextCheckAt gate, the listing-refusal backoff, the reservation merge transaction, the refusal regex that releases a slot, the attempt-history merge, and the hourly hold for exhausted rows. The two issues the earlier specialists raised are fixed correctly. An accepted GUID is recorded in the attempts collection before the reservation check and merged only into the matching reservation, and explicit refusals decrement the counter inside the same transaction. The 18 verifier tests pass, and version metadata is consistent across the five files that carry it.

    Findings (three, none above low):

    • Low. Backoff counter never resets after recovery. The refusal counter is only zeroed when a POST is accepted. Rows that will never POST again, such as one holding a pending GUID or one already Etherscan-verified but awaiting an exact Sourcify match, accumulate every transient explorer blip for life. A scratch run with one isolated refusal per day, each preceded by healthy polls, produced waits of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 60, 60 minutes. Anchored at line 62.
    • Low. Refused listing persists contradictory explorer fields. The listing branch overwrites etherscanVerified to false and etherscanMatch to null before deciding the reply was a refusal, then saves and returns without recomputing the derived state. A row that reported Etherscan verified in the previous step is persisted and surfaced on the module document with explorer state still "verified" next to verified false and a rate-limit error. Anchored at line 64.
    • Info. Inconsistent backoff policy for the same provider reply. A rate-limit reply on a status poll holds the row for a fixed hour and skips both providers, while the same reply on listing or submission backs off from one minute. This is tested and documented, so it is reported as a design inconsistency only. Anchored at line 126.

    Not verified. The new gate assumes Etherscan returns status 1 for an unverified contract. I could not confirm this live because the public endpoint rejects keyless calls, but it matches the documented API behaviour, so I did not report it.

    Each finding carries exact reproduction inputs. The scratch tests that confirmed them live under test/scratch/ and are not kept.

    • lowExplorer refusal backoff counter never resets after recovery, so isolated listing refusals escalate to a one-hour holdadapters/source-verification.mjs:62

      The new etherscanRefusals counter drives the backoff min(1h, 60s * 2^(refusals-1)) on both the getsourcecode refusal path (lines 60-65) and the POST refusal path (lines 99-103). The only place it is reset to 0 is line 93, when a verifysourcecode POST is accepted. A successful source listing (line 58), a successful status poll (line 112), and the final save never reset it.

      So the counter counts refusals over the row's whole lifetime, not over the current streak. Any row that will not POST again (a row already holding a pending GUID, a row that is Etherscan-verified but still waiting for an exact Sourcify match, or an exhausted row) therefore accumulates every transient explorer blip.

      After seven isolated refusals, every further single refusal parks the row for a full hour (nextCheckAt = now + 3600000) and, because line 32 returns early before Sourcify and Etherscan are read, both providers are skipped for that hour. The documented behaviour is that retries back off from one minute up to an hour, which implies a fresh streak starts at one minute.

      Fix: reset etherscanRefusals to 0 whenever the listing succeeds (entry present at line 60) and after a status poll that is not a refusal, or store the streak start time and derive the backoff from refusals since the last success.

      Deterministic reproduction with the in-memory SQLite store and a stub fetcher (same shape as the existing test file): Sourcify POST returns {verificationId:'source'}, Sourcify GET returns exact runtime and creation matches, verifysourcecode returns {status:'1',result:'guid-2'}, checkverifystatus returns {status:'0',result:'Pending in queue'}, and getsourcecode returns {status:'1',result:[{SourceCode:''}]} except when a flag is set, in which case it returns {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'}.

      Step 1: call step(input) once; the row gets etherscanGuid 'guid-2' and etherscanRefusals 0.

      Then for day = 1..8: run five healthy steps 30 s apart (etherscanError stays undefined each time), advance time by 86400000 ms, set the refusal flag for exactly one step, clear it, and record nextCheckAt - now.

      Expected: every one of these isolated refusals, each preceded by a day of healthy polls, backs off 60000 ms.

      Actual (observed): waits are 60000, 120000, 240000, 480000, 960000, 1920000, 3600000, 3600000 and the stored etherscanRefusals climbs 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,7.

      The same holds for a row whose Etherscan side is already verified (SourceCode '{}' and ContractName 'Example') while Sourcify creationMatch is 'match': that row never POSTs, so after seven lifetime blips each later single refusal costs an hour.

      In production this delays module state 'verified', and therefore prepareRegistration (which requires module.state === 'verified'), by up to an hour per transient explorer refusal.

    • lowRefused source listing persists etherscanVerified=false and etherscanMatch=null while leaving etherscanState='verified' (derived fields not recomputed on the new early-return paths)adapters/source-verification.mjs:64

      Line 58 unconditionally overwrites etherscanVerified with false and line 59 sets etherscanMatch to null before the new !entry branch at line 60 decides the listing was refused. That branch then saves and returns at line 64 without recomputing etherscanState, etherscanRetryExhausted, explorerUrl or sourcifyUrl (those are only computed at lines 129-133).

      Before this diff the same overwrite happened but the step always continued to lines 129-133, so the persisted row was internally consistent.

      After this diff a row whose previous step reported etherscanState: 'verified' is persisted, returned to chain-executor/vault-executor/wallet-executor, spread into the chain-modules / chain-registrations document by runOne, and exposed through project evidence with etherscanState: 'verified', etherscanVerified: false, etherscanMatch: null and etherscanError: 'Max rate limit reached' at the same time, for the whole backoff window (up to an hour, and indefinitely if the key is permanently invalid).

      The same family of stale derived fields appears on the line 32 early return: after the third verifysourcecode POST fails at the transport level, the row persisted at line 71 carries etherscanSubmissionCount 3 but the previous step's etherscanRetryExhausted false / etherscanState 'pending', and line 32 hands that row back unchanged for 60 s.

      Fix: on the refusal path keep the previous etherscanVerified/etherscanMatch (only overwrite them when an entry was actually read), or recompute the derived fields before every save/return, for example by moving the lines 129-133 computation into a helper used by all three exits.

      In-memory store, stub fetcher: Sourcify POST returns {verificationId:'source'}; Sourcify GET returns {runtimeMatch:'exact_match', creationMatch:'match'} (not exact, so state stays 'pending'); getsourcecode returns {status:'1',result:[{SourceCode:'{}',ContractName:'Example',SimilarMatch:''}]} on the first call and {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'} on the second.

      Step 1 at t=100000: result has etherscanState 'verified', etherscanVerified true, state 'pending'.

      Step 2 at t=130000: expected the persisted row to either keep etherscanVerified true (the listing was refused, nothing contradicted the earlier read) or to report a non-'verified' etherscanState.

      Actual (observed by reading chain-verifications after step 2): {etherscanState:'verified', etherscanVerified:false, etherscanMatch:null, etherscanError:'Max rate limit reached', nextCheckAt:190000}, and the same object is what step() returned and what the executor stores on the module document.

    • infoA single rate-limit reply to a status poll parks the row for an hour, unlike the one-minute exponential backoff used for the same reply on listing and submissionadapters/source-verification.mjs:126

      The diff introduces two backoff policies for the same provider reply. 'Max rate limit reached' (or 'Invalid API Key') on getsourcecode or verifysourcecode is matched by the refusal regexes and backs off exponentially from 60 s (lines 62-63, 99-102). The same text returned by checkverifystatus falls into the catch-all at line 126 and sets a fixed one-hour hold, during which line 32 skips the Sourcify read, the listing and the status poll entirely.

      This is covered by the existing test (lines 87-88 of test/source-verification.test.mjs advance time by 3600000 after that reply) and by docs/testnet.md, so it is reported as a design inconsistency rather than a regression. If the intent is that known transient refusals recover within minutes, apply the same refusal regex and etherscanRefusals backoff on the status path and reserve the hourly hold for genuinely unrecognized statuses such as 'Unknown UID'.

      Stub fetcher: listing returns {status:'1',result:[{SourceCode:''}]}, verifysourcecode returns {status:'1',result:'g'}, checkverifystatus returns {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'} once and {status:'0',result:'Pending in queue'} afterwards.

      Step at t=100000: GUID 'g' accepted, status poll rate-limited.

      Expected (by analogy with the listing and submission paths): nextCheckAt about 160000.

      Actual: nextCheckAt 3700000; steps at any t below 3700000 return the stored row without contacting either provider.

  5. Audit economicsAgent #715found 1 medium, 2 low, 1 info

    The review is complete and the findings file is written and validated. Nothing further is needed from the tree.

    Outcome. The two issues this candidate set out to fix hold up. Explicit refusals release only their matching reservation and back off exponentially, an accepted GUID is recorded in the attempts collection inside the same transaction and merged only into the reservation that sent it, and the sixty-second in-flight cooldown stops a duplicate step from reserving a second slot. I traced the reservation, refusal, GUID merge and exhaustion paths through the SQLite and PostgreSQL stores and through the deployment, vault, wallet and mainnet-release callers. No path exceeds three accepted or uncertain submissions, the count never goes negative, and state: 'verified' still requires the Etherscan listing plus exact Sourcify creation and runtime matches. All eighteen verifier tests pass locally.

    What I reported in .imd-findings.json, each confirmed with a scripted probe against the adapter:

    • Medium. A known rate-limit refusal on the status poll is treated as an unrecognized status and freezes the row for a full hour. The early return then also skips the Sourcify and listing reads, so a healthy job whose providers complete one minute later stays pending for the hour. The same message on the POST path backs off sixty seconds. The fixed hourly wake-up has no jitter, so rows rate-limited together wake together.
    • Low. A transient listing refusal persists etherscanVerified: false and etherscanMatch: null while leaving etherscanState: 'verified' in place, and that contradictory object is served for the whole backoff window and copied into deployment evidence rows.
    • Low. The refusal counter resets only on an accepted POST, so after seven old listing refusals a fresh indexer refusal on the first POST waits an hour instead of a minute.
    • Info. Exhausted rows whose listing read is refused are re-read on the one-minute schedule rather than hourly as the documentation states.

    No critical or high findings, so no Foundry proof files were required. The scratch probe was removed and the working tree is clean apart from the findings file.

    • mediumA known rate-limit refusal on checkverifystatus freezes the whole row for one hour, including Sourcify and listing readsadapters/source-verification.mjs:126

      The new status-poll branch treats every status-0 reply that is not pending/pass/fail as an 'unrecognized GUID status' and sets nextCheckAt one hour ahead. That bucket includes the explicit provider refusals the same file classifies as transient at line 99 (invalid api key, rate limit, daily limit, invalid action), which on the POST path release the slot and back off from 60 seconds.

      Because the early return at line 32 fires before the Sourcify match read and the Etherscan listing read, a single 'Max rate limit reached' on a status poll suspends all progress observation for the row, not just the GUID poll. The previous commit polled such a row every job step.

      Callers (chain-deployments runOne, vault and wallet executors) keep the job in 'verifying' and, for project-register, the chain-binding that gates proposal execution is not written until step returns 'verified'.

      The hour-long wake-up is a fixed interval with no jitter, so every row rate-limited in the same burst (chain-worker and both collaboration-worker verifiers share ETHERSCAN_API_KEY) wakes in the same 30-second window an hour later and can be rate-limited again as a group.

      Fix: apply the same refusal regex used at line 99 to the status reply and schedule it with the etherscanRefusals exponential backoff (60s doubling, capped at one hour), reserving the fixed hourly interval for genuinely unknown statuses such as 'Unknown UID'.

      State: row with etherscanGuid 'guid-1' accepted and Sourcify creationMatch 'match'.

      Step with fetcher returning checkverifystatus {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'}: stored nextCheckAt = now+3600000, etherscanError 'Max rate limit reached'.

      Then make Sourcify return creationMatch 'exact_match', getsourcecode return SourceCode '{}' with ContractName 'Example', and checkverifystatus 'Pass - Verified'.

      Call step every 30 seconds for the next 50 minutes: zero Sourcify, listing or status requests are made and state remains 'pending'; only after now+3600000 does step return state 'verified'.

      Expected (per the POST path for the identical message, line 99-102): nextCheckAt = now+60000 and recovery on the next step after one minute.

      Observed with test/scratch probe: 'P1 after status rate limit: nextCheckAt 3600000 ...

      P1 state after 50 min of completion: pending, calls during window {s:0,l:0,st:0}'; 'P1b POST rate limit backoff ms: 60000'.

    • lowA transient listing refusal persists etherscanVerified:false and etherscanMatch:null under a stale etherscanState:'verified'adapters/source-verification.mjs:58

      Lines 58-59 overwrite the listing result before the new !entry guard at line 60 decides the reply was a refusal rather than a listing. The refusal branch then saves and returns at line 64 without recomputing etherscanState or etherscanRetryExhausted (lines 129-131).

      A row whose Etherscan listing was already observed as verified (state still 'pending' only because Sourcify is not yet exact) therefore persists etherscanVerified:false, etherscanMatch:null and etherscanError:'Max rate limit reached' while etherscanState remains 'verified', and the early return at line 32 serves exactly that contradictory object to every caller for the whole backoff window (up to one hour).

      The object is copied verbatim into chain-modules / chain-registrations / project-vaults / wallet-actions rows by the job runners and surfaced to project owners as deployment evidence. Before this commit the final save always recomputed etherscanState, so the fields could not disagree.

      Fix: move the !entry check ahead of lines 58-59 (do not touch etherscanVerified/etherscanMatch when there is no listing), or recompute etherscanState before the early save.

      State: fetcher returns Sourcify {runtimeMatch:'exact_match',creationMatch:'match'} and getsourcecode {status:'1',result:[{SourceCode:'{}',ContractName:'Example'}]}.

      First step returns etherscanVerified:true, etherscanState:'verified', etherscanMatch:'exact', state:'pending'.

      Switch getsourcecode to {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'} and step 30s later: returned and stored row has etherscanVerified:false, etherscanMatch:null, etherscanError:'Max rate limit reached', nextCheckAt:now+60000 but etherscanState still 'verified'.

      Expected: listing fields untouched by a reply that contained no listing (or etherscanState recomputed to 'pending' together with them).

      Observed with test/scratch probe: 'P2 after refusal: {etherscanVerified:false, etherscanState:"verified", etherscanMatch:null, ...}'; 'P2 stored: {etherscanVerified:false, etherscanState:"verified"}'.

    • lowetherscanRefusals never resets after a successful listing read, so a later single indexer refusal waits the full houradapters/source-verification.mjs:62

      The backoff counter is incremented by listing refusals (line 62) and POST refusals (line 101) but is only reset to zero when a POST is accepted (line 93). A successful getsourcecode listing after a run of transient refusals leaves the counter at its ceiling.

      The first submission for that row is commonly refused with 'Unable to locate ContractCode' for a freshly deployed address; the release path at lines 99-102 then computes the interval from the stale counter and schedules the retry one hour out instead of one minute.

      The documented schedule ('retries back off from one minute to one hour') is therefore not restarted for a new refusal family, and the first POST of a healthy deployment can be delayed by an hour by key-level rate limits that ended a day earlier.

      Fix: set etherscanRefusals = 0 (or delete it) when a listing reply with an entry is received, or keep separate counters per refusal family.

      State: getsourcecode returns {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'} for 7 consecutive steps spaced by each returned nextCheckAt; row then has etherscanRefusals:7, etherscanSubmissionCount:0.

      24 hours later getsourcecode returns a normal unverified listing and verifysourcecode returns {status:'0',result:'Unable to locate ContractCode at 0x1111'}.

      Step: etherscanSubmissionCount is correctly released back to 0 but nextCheckAt = now+3600000 with etherscanRefusals 7.

      Expected: first refusal of a new kind after a successful listing backs off 60000 ms.

      Observed with test/scratch probe: 'P3 refusals after 7 listing refusals: 7'; 'P3 first POST indexer refusal backoff ms: 3600000 refusals 7 count 0'.

    • infoExhausted rows are re-read on the one-minute refusal schedule when the listing itself is refused, not hourly as documentedadapters/source-verification.mjs:63

      docs/testnet.md states exhausted rows are checked at most hourly. The !entry branch ignores etherscanRetryExhausted and schedules from the refusal counter, which starts at 60 seconds. After the hourly wake-up of an exhausted row, a refused listing causes the row to be re-read after 1, 2, 4 ... minutes (each read costing a Sourcify GET and an Etherscan call) until the counter reaches 7.

      No cap or state is affected; the only effect is request volume against a key that is already being refused.

      Fix: when value.etherscanRetryExhausted is true in the !entry branch, keep nextCheckAt at now()+3600000.

      State: row with etherscanSubmissionCount 3, no GUID, etherscanRetryExhausted true, nextCheckAt expired.

      Step with getsourcecode returning {status:'0',result:'Invalid API Key'}: stored nextCheckAt = now+60000 (etherscanRefusals 1).

      Expected per docs: now+3600000.

  6. Audit judgeAgent #172found 3 low, 1 info

    The review is complete. The findings file is written and validated, and no tracked files were changed.

    Outcome: all four distinct defects the specialists reported reproduce against the verifier at db3c4f2. The 13 specialist entries collapse into 4 merged findings in .imd-findings.json, each reproduced with a scratch probe under test/scratch/ using the in-memory store and a stub fetcher. The existing 18 verifier tests pass. No Solidity changed, so no Foundry proofs apply.

    Merged findings, by severity:

    • Low, line 126. A rate-limit reply on the GUID status poll sets a fixed one-hour hold on the whole row, which also blocks the Sourcify and listing reads. The same message on the submission path backs off 60 seconds. Observed 3,600,000 ms versus 60,000 ms, with zero provider requests for the whole hour even after verification had completed externally.
    • Low, line 58. A refused listing overwrites the listing fields before the refusal check and returns early without recomputing derived state. The row is persisted and served with etherscanState 'verified' alongside etherscanVerified false and etherscanMatch null. A first-contact refusal persists a row missing etherscanState, explorerUrl and sourcifyUrl.
    • Low, line 62. The refusal counter is only reset by an accepted POST, so isolated refusals over a row's lifetime ratchet to the one-hour cap. Observed waits 60s, 2m, 4m, 8m, 16m, 32m, 1h, 1h for refusals a full day apart with healthy polls in between.
    • Info, line 63. An exhausted row whose hourly listing read is refused is re-read on the one-minute schedule, contradicting the documented hourly cadence. Three extra listing reads observed in the following ten minutes.

    I found no additional regressions in the diff beyond these. The in-flight reservation, the GUID merge transaction, the attempt-history writes and the cap handling for HTTP and terminal failures behave as the task description states.

    • lowA known rate-limit reply on checkverifystatus freezes the whole row for one hour, unlike the 60 s exponential backoff the same message gets on listing and submissionadapters/source-verification.mjs:126

      In-memory store (openStore(':memory:')), now=100000, stub fetcher: Sourcify POST -> {verificationId:'source'}, Sourcify GET -> {runtimeMatch:'exact_match',creationMatch:'exact_match'}; getsourcecode -> {status:'1',result:[{SourceCode:'',ContractName:'Example'}]}; verifysourcecode -> {status:'1',result:'guid-1'}; checkverifystatus -> {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'}. step(input) once: result.etherscanGuid === 'guid-1' and result.nextCheckAt - now === 3600000.

      Control: same stub but verifysourcecode -> {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'}: result.nextCheckAt - now === 60000.

      Expected: the recognized rate-limit message on the status poll schedules the next poll on the same 60 s exponential backoff and does not block the Sourcify/listing reads.

      Actual: fixed 3,600,000 ms hold on the entire row.

    • lowA refused source listing overwrites etherscanVerified/etherscanMatch before the refusal check and returns early, persisting etherscanVerified=false and etherscanMatch=null beside a stale etherscanStatadapters/source-verification.mjs:58

    • lowetherscanRefusals is only reset by an accepted POST, so isolated refusals over a row's lifetime ratchet the backoff to the one-hour cap instead of restarting at one minuteadapters/source-verification.mjs:62

    • infoAn exhausted row whose hourly listing read is refused is re-read after 1, 2, 4 ... minutes instead of hourly as documentedadapters/source-verification.mjs:63

      In-memory store, now=100000, stub fetcher: Sourcify exact on both matches; getsourcecode -> {status:'1',result:[{SourceCode:'',ContractName:'Example'}]}; verifysourcecode -> {status:'1',result:'guid-N'}; checkverifystatus -> {status:'0',result:'Fail - Unable to verify'}.

      Three steps 90 s apart reach etherscanState 'operator_action_required', etherscanRetryExhausted true, nextCheckAt now+3600000.

      Advance to nextCheckAt+1, switch getsourcecode to {status:'0',result:'Max rate limit reached'}, step once: result.etherscanRetryExhausted === true and result.nextCheckAt - now === 60000 (expected 3600000).

      Stepping every 30 s for the next 10 minutes issues 3 further getsourcecode requests (at +1, +3 and +7 minutes).
