  3. Design criticAgent #470found 2 medium, 3 low

I found no broken features and nothing high: the timer works in both Chromium and WebKit, the product is on the first phone screen, and all 16 checks of the taste@1 probe pass. The five findings are two medium copy problems and three low polish items. They are in .imd-findings.json, and no other file was changed.

    Brief requirements2: 2 met, 0 missing, 0 faked

    Requirements

    • "one-page website": met. There is one index.html and no routes; the whole app is in src/App.tsx, and settings and help open as dialogs on the same page.
    • "FREE": met. The title and og:title say "FREE · Make room for focus". The wordmark at src/App.tsx:192 writes it in lowercase as "free", which is a low finding.
    • The brief names nothing else, so there is nothing that comes after review or needs the requester. The builder chose to make a focus timer. Sessions are saved in this browser only, and both the help dialog and the footer say so, so nothing is faked.

The idea: FREE is a calm focus timer. One thing carries it: an illustrated window onto green hills, with a large serif headline and an italic "focus." No other visual device competes with it.

    Findings

    1. Medium, taste: four mood lines sit on top of the hero pair: "A softer place for your attention.", "A little space to just be.", "A little less noise. A little more you." and "Just this browser. Just for you." Delete the first three. Change the storage note to "Your sessions are saved in this browser only."
    2. Medium, taste: the headings are slogans, not names for what they control. Rename them: "Small steps add up." → "Today", "Set the mood" → "Ambient sound", "Find your rhythm" → "Timer settings" (and delete its intro line), "Save rhythm" → "Save settings".
    3. Low, taste: on phones, "Brown noise" wraps to two lines, so its icon sits 9px higher than the other three (766 vs 775 at 390). Add justify-content:flex-start at src/styles.css:221.
    4. Low, taste: in the header, only the settings button has a ring around it, while "How it works" is plain text. Remove the ring at src/styles.css:46 but keep the high-contrast-mode border.
    5. Low, fidelity: the brief writes the name as "FREE", but the wordmark and share card show "free". Use capitals, or have the requester confirm the lowercase was intended.

    What I ran

    • The probe: I installed Playwright outside the repository, then ran IMD_PLAYWRIGHT=… node .imd/reads/skills/design-critic/scripts/taste.mjs --out test/scratch/taste. All 16 checks passed: no horizontal scroll at 320, 390 or 1440, 5 font sizes, 2 font families, 3 weights, and 21 words of prose on the first screen at 390. I checked them against the screenshots.
    • The timer walk: at 320 and 390, in both browsers, I took it through idle, running, paused, resume, finished, the break that follows, settings, help and sound selection, using a simulated clock. The start button and the line under the timer stayed put in every state. The day's totals went from 0 to 1 session and 25 minutes, the tab title shows the countdown while it runs, and there were no script errors.
    • WebKit setup: WebKit was missing system libraries at first. I installed them with sudo playwright install-deps webkit, a change to this machine's packages outside the repository, and then repeated the walk.
    • What I could not check: whether ambient sound is actually audible, because the browsers ran headless with no audio output. Only the selected state of the sound buttons was tested.

Passing every check does not mean there are no flaws; it means none of these checks caught one.

    • mediumtaste: four mood lines sit where a focus tool needs labels, under the hero's own voicesrc/App.tsx:229

Now: on top of the hero pair ('Make room for focus.' / 'A quiet timer for one thing at a time.'), the page adds four more mood lines that tell the visitor nothing: 'A softer place for your attention.' under the sound heading (App.tsx:229), 'A little space to just be.' under the illustration (App.tsx:225), 'A little less noise. A little more you.' in the footer (App.tsx:244), and the storage note 'Just this browser. Just for you.' (App.tsx:244).

Change to: delete the in .sound-heading so the volume row moves up under the heading; delete .room-caption (span and p) so the illustration fills .room-pane, which keeps its 22px bottom padding; delete so the storage note is the only item in the footer; reword the storage note to 'Your sessions are saved in this browser only.' (that is what the Guide already says).

Why: the page is a tool. Tool headings name the task and carry no voice line. 'Cut the stack, not the best line': keep the hero pair and cut the other four. The storage note is the one line here a visitor needs, and right now it reads as a slogan, not as a fact.

Width 390 and 1440, Chromium and WebKit.

Load dist/index.html and scroll to the end.

At 390 the full-page shot (test/scratch/taste/shots/390-full.png) shows 'A softer place for your attention.' under 'Set the mood', then the footer pair 'A little less noise.

A little more you.' / 'Just this browser.

      Just for you.'.

At 1440 (shots/1440.png) 'A little space to just be.' sits under the illustration.

The probe's slogans check passes because it only looks for two-beat taglines, so these were confirmed on the screenshots.

    • mediumtaste: section and dialog headings are slogans instead of naming what they controlsrc/App.tsx:239

Now: the controls have plain names (the header button is 'Timer settings', the sound group is 'Ambient sound', the stats read 'sessions today'), but the headings above them are mood lines: 'Small steps add up.' over the daily totals (App.tsx:239), 'Set the mood' over the sound buttons (App.tsx:229), 'Find your rhythm' as the title of the dialog opened by 'Timer settings' (App.tsx:53), and 'Save rhythm' as its submit button (App.tsx:65).

Change to: 'Small steps add up.' -> 'Today'; 'Set the mood' -> 'Ambient sound'; 'Find your rhythm' -> 'Timer settings', with its intro 'Make a little time that works for you.' (App.tsx:54) deleted so the duration fields move up; 'Save rhythm' -> 'Save settings'.

Why: on a tool, headings name the task in plain words. A visitor who taps 'Timer settings' should land on a dialog called that, and a heading over two numbers should say what the numbers are.

      Width 390, Chromium and WebKit.

Tap the round settings button at the top right (aria-label 'Timer settings').

The dialog opens titled 'Find your rhythm' (/tmp walk screenshot chromium-390-settings.png, dialog box 19,157,352x530).

Scroll the page to the end: the totals block is headed 'Small steps add up.' and the sound row is headed 'Set the mood' (shots/390-full.png).

    • lowtaste: the 'Brown noise' button wraps, so its icon sits 9px above the other threesrc/styles.css:221

Now: on phones the four sound buttons stack icon over label and centre both vertically (justify-content:center). 'Brown noise' wraps to two lines, so its icon and label start 9px higher than the icons and labels in Quiet, Rain and Ocean, and the row of icons looks broken.

Change to: add justify-content:flex-start to this .sound-button rule inside @media (max-width:39rem). All four icons then sit on the same line 12px below the top edge, and the second line of 'Brown noise' takes up the space below. The label stays as it is.

Why: the four buttons are one control group and should share one baseline. Only the alignment value changes; no label is shortened.

      Widths 320 and 390, Chromium.

Load the page and measure each .sound-button icon and label top.

At 390: Quiet, Rain and Ocean icons are at y=775 with labels at y=802 (18px tall); the Brown noise icon is at y=766 with its label at y=793 (36px tall, two lines).

      At 320: 796/823 against 787/814.

You can see it in shots/390.png at the bottom of the first screen.

    • lowtaste: only the settings utility in the header has a ring around itsrc/styles.css:46

Now: the header has two utilities side by side. 'How it works' is bare text (border 0), and the settings icon sits in a 1px bordered circle (border-radius 50%). The ring marks nothing: neither button is active or primary.

Change to: delete this rule's border and radius (keep the forced-colors border at styles.css:252 so the icon still reads as a button in high-contrast mode). The icon keeps its 44px hit area and the hover background from .icon-button:hover.

Why: utilities sit at the right edge of the header with no box around them unless the box marks something.

      Widths 390 and 1440, Chromium.

Computed styles of .header-actions buttons: 'How it works' has border-top 0px none and radius 0px; 'Timer settings' has 1px solid and radius 50%.

Visible at the top right of shots/390.png and shots/1440.png.

    • lowfidelity: the brief's name FREE is shown as lowercase 'free' in the wordmark and share cardsrc/App.tsx:192

Now: the brief names the site 'FREE'. The page title, og:title and the Guide's text use 'FREE', but the wordmark at the top left of every screen renders the lowercase text 'free', and so does the share card (public/share.png).

Change to: change the wordmark text from free to FREE, and its letter-spacing in .wordmark (styles.css:40) from -.06em to -.02em so the capitals don't touch. Regenerate share.png with scripts/share-card.mjs so the card matches. If the lowercase was chosen on purpose, ask the requester to confirm instead.

Why: the brief's words come before the site's own system, and the only explicit word in the brief is the name in capitals.

Width 390 and 1440. Load the page: the wordmark at the top left reads 'free' (shots/390.png and shots/1440.png), while document.title is 'FREE · Make room for focus'. dist/share.png also shows 'free' above the headline.
